Half Dome standing watch over the valley…

After 3 days of rain, sleet and snow, our school group woke up to blue skies and nearly 50°!! Our students were gifted with hikes to El Capitan, Upper Yosemite Falls and all over the valley floor… we’re so grateful to @naturebridge for a fun and educational week that included nearly ALL the elements 😂

🏔️Chaperoning our son’s school trip to Yosemite this week. It began with a deluge of pouring rain and sleet, and by day 2 finally broke into the most spectacular blanket of snow… and with all the rain, I’ve never seen Yosemite Falls SO full! 🌊

❄️ For many, this is their first trip to a National Park and seeing snow! I’m grateful to share this experience with them!

Hiking the Grand Wash @capitolreefnps is one of our favorite things to do at the park. The scale is just so fascinating and typically you don’t encounter many people along the trail! The tall stone walls and the narrow passage through the wash make it so awe inspiring. Plus there are so many places for the kids to scramble and explore.

Although we haven’t posted much lately, we have managed to get out on the road. We got back to one of our favorite National Parks, @capitolreefnps and drove the road to Cathedral Valley. What an amazing drive! It’s all dirt roads that were in fairly good shape when we made the journey. We parked and had a nice lunch at the Temple of the Moon.

Worth noting that there is a water crossing at one end of the loop, check with the Park’s visitor center for more information on that as it likely changes seasonally.

This was a tough photo to get. Keeping a safe distance, it maxxed out the zoom lens we had and we were shooting through a bunch of scraggly trees and brush along the Old Fall Trail Road in @rockynps .

There were a group of large elk having a midday snack. One of them had the most enormous antlers we had ever seen! It was amazing how effortlessly he appeared to be moving his head with all that weight! It was almost surreal!

Rocky Mountain NP definitely offered the most experiences with wildlife that we’ve seen in an National Park yet. We haven’t made it to Yellowstone yet and we heard it’s pretty awesome there too!

If you’re cruising along Interstate 70 in Utah j

If you’re cruising along Interstate 70 in Utah just north of Capitol Reef NP, you’ll see a pull-out for the Salt Wash View Area. We thought it was totally worth the quick stop to pull off and wander around a bit and take in what was an amazing view!

We were on our way to Rocky Mountain NP in Colorado and given the long drive, a few stops were just what our legs needed to get a little stretch.

Do you stop at view areas when you’re on a road trip? What have been some of your favorites?

If you look very closely you’ll see Old Fall Riv

If you look very closely you’ll see Old Fall River Road and a couple of cars making their way up the dirt road trail in @rockynps Rocky Mountain NP. You get a good sense of the scale of this amazing landscape, it’s so open and so vast!

It was so amazing to get the wheels dirty on Old F

It was so amazing to get the wheels dirty on Old Fall River Road in Rocky Mountain NP @rockynps ! The road, which opened in 1920 and was the first auto route through the high country, is an 11-mile, one-way, uphill, gravel trail with some dramatic switchbacks. When you get to the top, you’re at 11,796 feet of elevation and on the Tundra which is such an amazing landscape!

We saw some large, mature elk along the Road and stopped to snap some pics which we’ll post soon.

If you’re curious about difficulty of the road, we had no problem with our Subaru Ascent in terms of ground clearance, etc. and we saw some sedans doing it. It was rutted out in the switchbacks and that’s probably where it’s the most sketchy.

We just returned from Rocky Mountain NP… “WOW” doesn’t begin to describe it’s beauty. We stayed on the west side of the park which was heavily burned in last year’s historic fire, but to see a herd of elk grazing in the lush grass reminds you of how incredible our parks are…
